COLLABORATION IN ACTION<\/p>\n

In the five years since the launch of the Kilachand Fund, and the opening of the\u00a0<\/span>Kilachand Center for Integrated Life Sciences and Engineering<\/span><\/a>, the $100 million interdisciplinary research fund has advanced work on science’s biggest challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2017, BU trustee\u00a0<\/span>Rajen Kilachand\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>made a\u00a0<\/span>historic gift<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of $115 million dollars to enable interdisciplinary work. Since its launch, the fund has awarded $12 million dollars to projects that have advanced science, established collaborative structures for cross-collaborative research, and expanded educational and funding opportunities.\u00a0<\/span>Learn more about the impact of the projects<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Early Career Workshop:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Young investigator awards provide critical support to early career faculty, often serving as a funding bridge between postdoctoral years and fully independent investigator status. To give BU’s young investigators valuable insights about how to secure these competitive awards,\u00a0\u00a0we are convening a panel on December 1 of early career funding program managers<\/a>\u00a0from federal agencies and foundations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ignition Awards:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Ignition Awards are designed to help BU faculty bring promising proprietary ideas to market. Eligible projects are those that will result in a licensable asset (i.e., a copyright or patent).\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>Boston University Technology Development<\/a>\u00a0is soliciting Letters of Interest (LOIs) for the 2023 Ignition Award Program. Ignition Awards support BU ideas with clear commercial potential. We offer awards at two levels: $75,000 and $25,000.\u00a0LOIs are due by Tuesday, November 1<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Digital Health Initiative (DHI) Focused Research Program (FRP) Funding:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Join the Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science & Engineering, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the School of Public Health, the Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research, and the School of Medicine, on\u00a0November 30<\/strong>\u00a0for a briefing on the DHI FRP funding call. The event will also include presentations from researchers with expertise on digital health, and will offer a unique networking and team formation opportunity.\u00a0Register to attend.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Meet the American Lung Association:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Join the Office of Research and Foundation Relations on Wednesday, November 2, for\u00a0<\/strong>a virtual workshop<\/a>\u00a0led by\u00a0the\u00a0American Lung Association (ALA)<\/strong>. The ALA is a leading national funder of basic, behavioral, clinical and translational research for lung health. Deadlines for five of the\u00a0ALA’s grant programs\u00a0<\/a>are December 15, allowing participants the opportunity to learn more about the ALA’s grant-making priorities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Nancy J. Sullivan<\/span><\/strong>, a nationally renowned infectious diseases expert and chief of the Biodefense Research Section at the federal government’s\u00a0Vaccine Research Center<\/a>, has been named the new director of BU’s\u00a0National Emerging infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL).<\/a>\u00a0Learn more about Dr. Sullivan and her\u00a0vision for the NEIDL<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Joyce Wong<\/span><\/strong>, Biomedical Engineering (ENG), inaugural director of\u00a0ARROWS<\/a>, has been chosen to join the advisory council for the\u00a0National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering at NIH<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A team of scientists led by\u00a0<\/span>Associate Professor Anthony Griffiths<\/span><\/strong>, Microbiology (Chobianian & Avedisian School of Medicine),\u00a0at the\u00a0<\/span>National\u00a0Emerging Infectious Disease Laboratories<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>has received a 15-month grant of up to $5.2 million from the\u00a0<\/span>Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation (CEPI).<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Funds from this award will be used to support the development of vaccines against the deadly Nipah virus. Through this partnership, Griffiths’ lab will provide CEPI-supported Nipah vaccine developers with preclinical models to test their vaccine candidates and ensure CEPI and regulators they are being assessed under rigorous quality standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Lee Roberts,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Physics (CAS), and collaborator William M. Morse of the US Department of Energy’s\u00a0Brookhaven National Laboratory<\/a>, have received the American Physical Society’s\u00a02023 W.K.H Panofsky Prize in Experimental Particle Physics<\/a>\u00a0for their leadership of the moun g-2 experiment at Brookhaven lab and its role in sparking a worldwide search for new physics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Co-investigators\u00a0<\/span>Professor Andrew Budson\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>and\u00a0<\/span>Assistant Professor Katherine Turk,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>both from Neurology (Chiobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine)<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>have launched two new studies with\u00a0<\/span>VoxNeuro,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>a Software as a Medical Device brain health company that analyzes brain-based biomarkers to assess cognitive function. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Statements added to BU Profiles:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Originally intended to serve as an online platform for networking and collaborations among biomedical researchers, the\u00a0BU Profiles<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>site has undergone several advancements since its launch in 2012. In addition to providing researchers with various metrics to track the impact of their research, it now allows BU’s nearly 5,000 affiliated faculty, researchers, and staff members the option to add\u00a0a personalized DEIA statement\u00a0<\/a>to their profile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2022 Photonics Center Symposium:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>On December 1, the Boston University Photonics Center is hosting their international symposium on\u00a0Photonics and Artificial Intelligence.<\/em><\/a>\u00a0This one-day event will include a series of talks and discussion relevant to both industry and academia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The CHIPS and Science Act<\/span><\/strong>, passed by the US Congress on August 9,\u00a0sets ambitious new funding targets for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the\u00a0Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
