Our office prioritizes supporting these institutional training initiatives\u2014especially those fostering cross-disciplinary and convergent research\u2014by offering comprehensive support to faculty planning to submit for these grants. Note that institutional training grants are distinct from individual fellowship or career development awards (e.g., NIH F or K awards). Applicants for these grant types are encouraged to consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/research\/funding-grants\/proposal-development-grantwriting\/proposal-library\/\">Proposal Library<\/a> for examples of successful proposals.<\/p>\n<p>BU Research Development offers the following training grant support for faculty:<\/p>\n<div class=\"floatright bu-callout alignright\"><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bu-institutional-support-guideline-for-training-grants\">BU Institutional Support Guideline for Training Grants<\/h2>\n<p>Clear, consistent, and sustainable institutional support for competitive federal training grants across BU\u2019s CRC campus<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/research\/offices-contacts\/research-support-offices\/research-development\/training-grant-support\/bu-institutional-support-guideline-for-training-grants\/\" class=\"button button-primary\">Learn More<\/a><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Preparation of institutional training grant proposals<\/strong> submitted to federal sponsors \u2013 including new, renewal, and resubmission applications<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tracking federal training-grant policies and updates<\/strong> to ensure institutional compliance and alignment with evolving NIH and NSF requirements and priorities<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implementation of faculty-focused programs and resources<\/strong> that enhance competitiveness and strengthen the quality of training grant applications<\/li>\n<li><strong>Development of centralized data systems<\/strong> to manage trainee, mentor, and program data for proposal preparation, reporting, and long-term evaluation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"our-process-and-role\">Our Process and Role<\/h2>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Getting Started<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"getting-started\"><span hidden>Getting Started<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Research Development follows a training grants timeline to ensure meaningful, full-service support for our faculty. As such, we ask that prospective PIs reach out to us <strong>at least 6 months in advance of the funder deadline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Interested PIs should express interest using our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/research\/research-development-support-request\/\">Research Development Support Request<\/a>.  Once we\u2019re notified of a planned submission, a member of the Research Development team will arrange an initial meeting with the PI and their administrative team to review roles, timelines, and next steps.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Proposal Preparation<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"proposal-preparation\"><span hidden>Proposal Preparation<\/span><\/h3>\n<h5>What We Support:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Template drafts of select non-scientific sections, e.g.:\n<ul>\n<li>Facilities and Other Resources<\/li>\n<li>Plan for Instruction in Responsible Conduct of Research<\/li>\n<li>Plan for Instruction in Methods for Enhancing Reproducibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Data table preparation and assembly (with input and revision from the PI)<\/li>\n<li>Strategic bibliometric data\u2013leveraging platforms such as SciVal and Dimensions\u2013to map collaboration networks and demonstrate program productivity and impact<\/li>\n<li>Institutional letter of support, drafted in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/research\/files\/__restricted\/entire-bu-community\/CRC-Support-Guideline-for-Training-Grants_10_22_2025.docx\">BU Institutional Support Guideline for Training Grants<\/a> (download)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>What Remains with the PI Team<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Drafting the full narrative or designing novel program strategy<\/li>\n<li>Tailoring of template documents to incorporate program-specific information<\/li>\n<li>Determining the number of trainee slots to be requested<\/li>\n<li>Data tables that require judgment calls about trainees or detailed program-specific information (e.g., NIH T32 Tables 5,7,8)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that submission of all training grants is done through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/research\/offices-contacts\/research-support-offices\/sponsored-programs\/\">Sponsored Programs<\/a>, and PIs must adhere to SP&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/research\/forms-policies\/proposal-submission-policy\/\">Proposal Submission Policy<\/a>.
