A grant cost transfer is an after-the-fact reallocation of a direct expense, either salary or non-salary, to or from a sponsored project within a 90-calendar day period from the accounting date of a transaction. It is allowable if it is initiated in a timely fashion to correct a valid error and is supported by appropriate justification and documentation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Identifying & Correcting Errors<\/h2>\n

Non-Salary and Salary adjustments and cost transfers are allowed within reason on Sponsored Research awards.<\/p>\n

Principal Investigators (PIs) and Department Administrators must ensure charges to sponsored projects are accurate and in accordance with direct charging practices described in 2 CFR 200 Uniform Guidance and university policy. On a regular basis, the Department Administrator should run financial reports for each sponsored project using Boston University\u2019s Grants Management (Distributed) Reports, which are found in the \u201cReporting\u201d tab of the BUWorks Central Portal<\/a>. The administrator must work with the PI to review these reports to check\/validate the financial status of each project and to identify legitimate errors.<\/p>\n

Unallowable costs, erroneously charged to an award, must be promptly transferred to your Departmental University Cost Center, Discretionary Account, or other non-sponsored project account.\u00a0 Departments should work with their Sponsored Programs Post-Award Officer if they have any questions on how to resolve.\u00a0 <\/span>Find your SP-Post Award Officer<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Upon monitoring all of your expenditures, if an error is discovered, please refer to the Salary Adjustment Procedure<\/a> or Non-Salary Cost Transfer Procedure<\/a>, depending on the nature of the error.<\/p>\n
