Boston University’s Institutional Review Boards (IRB) announce a new, streamlined process for Charles River Campus (CRC) students collaborating on human subjects research at Boston University Medical Campus (BUMC) and/or Boston Medical Center (BMC).

What’s Changed

Previously, each research study involving CRC students collaborating on a BMC/BUMC study required a reliance agreement between the CRC IRB and the BMC/BUMC IRB, if the CRC student received academic credit for their work on the study.

New Process, Effective Immediately

Now, BU and BMC/BUMC have established a global reliance agreement between the CRC and BMC/BUMC IRBs that covers all CRC students participating in BUMC/BMC human subjects research.

What This Means

  • Individual reliance agreements per study are no longer required.
  • CRC students may be added to BUMC/BMC studies via a standard Internal Study Personnel Change form submitted to the BMC/BUMC IRB by the BMC/BUMC study team.
  • This new, streamlined process reduces administrative burden and shortens onboarding timelines for students.

Scope and Exceptions

  • The global reliance agreement applies to CRC students participating in BUMC/BMC human subjects research going forward.
  • Collaboration between CRC and BUMC/BMC faculty will continue to follow existing practices and may still require execution of reliance agreements where appropriate.
