Funding Opportunity: Howard Hughes Medical Institute Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study

Purpose: To support students from groups historically excluded from and underrepresented in science who are preparing to assume leadership roles in science and science education, and to foster the development of a healthier, more inclusive academic scientific ecosystem.
The program supports dissertation adviser/graduate student pairs who together embody scientific leadership and the commitment to building an equitable and inclusive science culture.
Eligibility: Awards are open to eligible pairs comprising thesis advisers and PhD students. Fellows must be 1) in their 2nd or 3rd year of a PhD program, and 2) have 2+ full years of study remaining as of 9/1/25. Adviser-student pairs must be studying scientific problems in biomedical sciences, life sciences, and biological questions in related disciplines.
Funding: Up to $159,000 over up to 3 years (annually $36,000 stipend, $10,000 institutional allowance, $4,000 discretionary allowance, and $3,000 adviser allowance), no indirect costs (ID)
