BU Ignition Awards Help Translate Groundbreaking Research into Market-Ready Solutions for People with Cancer, Kidney Disease, Sensitive Teeth, and More

By bridging the gap between lab breakthroughs and practical applications, BU Technology Development’s annual Ignition Awards help accelerate innovation and improve lives faster. This year, six promising projects won financial support along with coaching and mentoring for the recipients from industry veterans. Letters of interest for the FY25 solitication are due Friday, November 1.

Find Collaborators Researching Health Inequities, Women’s Health, and Clean Energy

This semester, the University’s popular Research on Tap event series will address health inequities through a health economics lens, the need for research and research communities dedicated to women’s health, and the transition to clean energy. Events are open to all faculty, staff, and graduate students, and feature lightning talks from researchers across BU schools and colleges. Sustainability Research Funding for Student-Mentor Teams

The BU Institute for Global Sustainability seeks applications for  Campus Climate Lab, which funds student/mentor research on climate change impacts, adaptation, and mitigation at BU. Learn more in an  information session on Friday, September 13 and apply by Friday, September 27.

Fellowships for Early Career and Senior Researchers

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s  NRC Research Associateship Programs are prestigious postdoctoral and senior research awards designed to provide promising scientists and engineers with high-quality research opportunities at federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. The next deadline is Friday, November 1.

Personnel Activity Reports

Personnel activity reports for January through June 2024 must be submitted to effort@bu.edu by Friday, October 4.

Postdoctoral Compensation

Effective January 1, 2025, BU will be increasing the salary and stipend minimum for all current BU postdocs:

  • 0-2 years of BU experience: $67,500
  • More than 2 years of BU experience: $70,000

All new proposals submitted through Sponsored Programs require postdoc salaries to be budgeted at the new institutional minimums. All new and current postdoc appointments as of January 1, 2025, must reflect the new salary and stipend minimums, as appropriate to the postdoc’s year(s) of service. MOC Alliance provides open-source production cloud services through the New England Research Cloud (NERC), a production cloud operated by BU and Harvard Research IT, built on the strong foundation of the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC). The NERC, which enables researchers access to hardware and other resources at a low cost, can benefit you if your research has outgrown your local computing resources and you are looking for a cloud solution. NSF Research Traineeship Grant: For the second time in two years, BU has received a large traineeship grant from the NSF. A team headed by Professor and Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Malika Jeffries-EL, Chemistry (CAS), has received a five-year, $3 million grant to enable PhD students to work together across disciplines on innovative methods for converting and storing sustainable energy. Read more

Professor Andrew Budson, Neurology (Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine), received $150K from the  US Israel Binational Science Foundation to test whether a new neurofeedback technique may improve memory in patients with early-stage Alzheimer’s Disease.

Assistant Professor Andreas Charidimou, Neurology (Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine), was awarded $200K from the Alzheimer’s Association for his research to more accurately diagnose cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Professor Vivek Goyal, Electrical & Computer Engineering (ENG), was featured by the  American Association for the Advancement of Science for his work using computer modeling techniques to better understand photons.

Professor Mark Grinstaff, Biomedical Engineering (ENG), Chemistry (CAS), and director of the BUnano Center, won a $3M NSF Trailblazer Engineering Impact Award for his work on a revolutionary new technology designed to provide more effective vaccines at significantly lower doses.

Assistant Professor Najoung Kim, Linguistics (CAS), was awarded $750K from Open Philanthropy to support her research on the capabilities of large language models in performing machine learning research.

Professor Swathi Kiran, Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences (SAR) and director of the BU Center for Brain Recovery, and Clinical Professor Elizabeth Hoover, Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences (SAR), were awarded Honors of the Association by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Assistant Professor Rabia Yazicigil Kirby, Electrical & Computer Engineering (ENG), and Assistant Professor Emma Lejeune, Mechanical Engineering (ENG), were elected to the National Academy of Engineering 2024 US Frontiers of Engineering cohort.

The Boston Medical Center Laboratory and Biorepository Services Core Center of Excellence for Serology Development and Emergency Preparedness Project is recruiting research participants who are 18+ years of age for its COVID-19 study. The study’s goal is to help develop new tests and continue to learn about the immune system and its response to infections and vaccines.
