NIH Announces Childcare Costs for Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Supported Individual Fellows in Notice No. NOT-OD-21-069

NIH Announces Childcare Costs for Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Supported Individual Fellows in Notice No. NOT-OD-21-069

As part of NIH’s on-going efforts to develop programs that support family-friendly research environments for the NIH-supported workforce, NIH will begin providing an option for recipients of NRSA individual fellowships to request support for childcare costs in new and continuation applications or as administrative supplements to existing awards effective April 8, 2021.

The NRSA childcare costs apply to full-time NIH-NRSA-supported fellowship positions.  Each fellow is eligible to receive $2,500 per budget period for childcare costs provided by a licensed childcare provider.  For households where both parents are NRSA fellows, each parent is eligible to receive $2,500.

In Phase 2 of this initiative, a similar cost will be provided for NRSA-supported trainees (anticipated early FY 2022).  Additional information and implementation guidance will be issued for Phase 2 of this initiative.

Please see the complete NIH Notice NOT-OD-21-069 for information on applicability, policy, and application instructions for new and competing applications as well as administrative supplements on an existing award (which must be submitted in accordance with Notice of Special Interest NOT OD-21-070).  Applicants are strongly encouraged to request childcare costs for all applicable years that the project will be funded based on the dependent(s)’ age eligibility factor.
