{"id":1144,"date":"2014-10-15T12:18:12","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T16:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/?page_id=1144"},"modified":"2026-02-23T12:48:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T17:48:19","slug":"definitions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/academics\/ferpa\/definitions\/","title":{"rendered":"FERPA Definitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"definitions\">\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Consent-to-Disclosure<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<a id=\"consent\"><\/a>Permission granted by a student via <a href=\"https:\/\/mybustudent.bu.edu\/\">MyBU Student<\/a> (Manage Guests section) to the University to communicate with parents\/guardians\/others in certain limited circumstances, including the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The student voluntarily withdraws or takes a leave of absence<\/li>\n<li>The student is suspended or dismissed from the University<\/li>\n<li>The student is required to leave University housing<\/li>\n<li>The permitted person has questions or concerns about the student\u2019s financial aid or student account<\/li>\n<li>The student is placed on academic probation (a school or college official may notify parents)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Delegated Access<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nA function in <a href=\"https:\/\/mybustudent.bu.edu\/\">MyBU Student<\/a> (Manage Guests section) that students can use to grant a parent or other person online access to their transcript, proof of enrollment, and Student Accounting invoice.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Directory information<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<a id=\"directoryinfo\"><\/a>Student data that, unless restricted by the student, can be released to third parties upon request, including the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Legal First and Last Name<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Lived&#8221; or &#8220;Display&#8221; First Name<\/li>\n<li>Student ID (BUID)<\/li>\n<li>Student Email Address<\/li>\n<li>Academic program (degree, major, minor)<\/li>\n<li>Dates of attendance, full-time \/ part-time status<\/li>\n<li>Degrees, honors, and awards received<\/li>\n<li>Local Address*<\/li>\n<li>BU directory phone number<\/li>\n<li>School\/College, Department<\/li>\n<li>Listing in the Commencement program<\/li>\n<li>Listing in the Bostonia Yearbook<\/li>\n<li>Amount of Stipend or hourly pay (members of BUGWU only)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--\n \t\n\n<li>Academic program (degree, major, minor)<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Dates of attendance, full-time \/ part-time status<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Degrees, honors, and awards received<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Local address* and BU directory phone number<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>School or college<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Listing in the Commencement program<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Listing in the <em>Bostonia Yearbook<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n--><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: -12px;\">*If the University has only a home address in New England or New York, it is considered the local address.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Education records<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<a id=\"edrecords\"><\/a>With certain exceptions, records relating to a student that are maintained by the University.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Parent<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<a id=\"parent\"><\/a>A parent of a student and includes a natural parent (custodial and\/or non-custodial), a guardian, or an individual acting as a parent in the absence of a parent or guardian.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Personally identifiable information<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<a id=\"personal\"><\/a>A student\u2019s name, the name of the student\u2019s parent or other family member, the address of the student or the student\u2019s family, or other information that would allow the student to be identified.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Proof of Enrollment statement<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<a id=\"proofenroll\"><\/a>An official document provided by the Office of the University Registrar which includes the following information about a student:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Name<\/li>\n<li>Degree program<\/li>\n<li>BU ID number<\/li>\n<li>Semester<\/li>\n<li>Start and end dates for each semester<\/li>\n<li>Course load<\/li>\n<li>Anticipated graduation semester<\/li>\n<li>Enrollment status for each semester (Full-time, Half-time, Less than Half-time)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Student<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<a id=\"student\"><\/a>One who is, or has been, officially registered, and who attends, or has attended, classes at Boston University.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1184,"featured_media":0,"parent":1193,"menu_order":1,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/1144"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1184"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1144"}],"version-history":[{"count":44,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/1144\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":9559,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/1144\/revisions\/9559"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/1193"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1144"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
