{"id":38,"date":"2009-06-10T15:29:55","date_gmt":"2009-06-10T19:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rct\/?page_id=38"},"modified":"2025-08-19T20:56:51","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T00:56:51","slug":"context-need","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rct\/about\/context-need\/","title":{"rendered":"RCT History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Timeline of the Tom Porter Religion &amp; Conflict Transformation Program<\/b><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2003<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing out of a long collaboration between the Boston Theological Institute (BTI, now called the Boston Theological Interreligious Institute)\u00ad\u00ad\u00ad and the JustPeace Center for Mediation and Conflict Transformation in the United Methodist Church, the Certificate program in Religion and Conflict Transformation was formally established by the BTI.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dean Ray Hart agreed to provide an anchor for the certificate program at Boston University School of Theology<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2004<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alumni, faculty, students and religious leaders we assembled with the help of the Luce Foundation, affirming the need to prepare religious leaders in the theology, theory, and practice of conflict transformation as a central mission of the seminary<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Porter becomes first Program Director<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom along with Rodney Petersen, the executive director of the BTI, taught a course entitled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engaging Conflict Well<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has been taught every year since in the fall and now is called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Spirit and Art of Conflict Transformation: Creating a Culture of JustPeace<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2005<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom and Rodney teach <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Religion and the Ministry of Reconciliation.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a year\u2019s work by a design team of faculty, staff and students, the RCT Program\u2019s first design is unanimously approved by faculty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Faculty Leadership Team is created, composed of members who teach qualifying courses for the Certificate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2006<\/b><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RCT Program is officially launched with 15 students.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2007<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program grows to 29 students<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Annual Fall Retreat is held.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2008<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Integrative Seminar for graduating students was created in the spring. Over time this became the Spring Capstone, an opportunity for the RCT community to hear each graduating participant in the program share learnings from their study in the RCT Program as well as how these learnings will guide them in their work in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a generous grant from the Luce Foundation in 2008, the program was able to expand its work on many fronts, including with practicums, scholarships, a lecture series and the employment of a student Program Administrator.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2010<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Spring, the first course in Restorative Justice was taught with students from the Law school, School of Social Work and the School of Theology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held a Consultation of Theological Educators in Conflict Transformation\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Began to support contextual education through travel courses to places such as Columbia, Jamaica, Israel\/Palestine, South India, and Indonesia. Such travel seminars have continued to the present and have expanded to include new regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Porter\u2019s book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Spirit-Art-Conflict-Transformation-Justpeace\/dp\/0835810267\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spirit &amp; the Art of Conflict Transformation<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is published based on the core RCT course.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2012<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A second generous grant was received from the Luce Foundation to develop our Clinic program of practicums, workshops, and partnerships.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Convened a Consultation on the Formation of Interfaith Just Peacemakers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2014<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hired first co-director of the Clinic, Salma Kazmi.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2016<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Judith Oleson joined the RCT program as a Co-Director, bringing a wealth of experience teaching conflict studies, nonprofit leadership, social work, and transitional justice, working in Croatia and Canada. Among many responsibilities, she leads our work with Hebrew College, our other partnerships, and our research. Tom Porter and Judith served as Co-Directors for three years.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinic closes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Porter retires in June.
