{"id":1785,"date":"2023-05-17T12:49:34","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T16:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rbfl\/?p=1785"},"modified":"2023-05-17T12:49:34","modified_gmt":"2023-05-17T16:49:34","slug":"the-success-of-b-corps-funding-profitability-and-public-perception","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rbfl\/2023\/05\/17\/the-success-of-b-corps-funding-profitability-and-public-perception\/","title":{"rendered":"The success of B Corps: Funding, Profitability, and Public Perception"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BY: Aster Cheng, RBFL Editor<\/p>\n<p>The priorities of consumers are changing\u2013\u2013as consumers place more weight on the environmental and social impacts of companies in their decision making, more companies are choosing to become B Corporations (\u201cB Corps\u201d).<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><span>[1]<\/span><\/a> B Corps are for-profit companies who have met a standard of ESG factors established by B Lab, a nonprofit organization.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><span>[2]<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To be considered a B Corp, companies must (1) pass an initial assessment to demonstrate \u201chigh social and environmental performance\u201d; (2) alter its corporate governance structure to be accountable to all stakeholders, not merely shareholders; and (3) allow their performance evaluations to be publicly available on B Lab\u2019s website.<sup> <a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>B Corps\u2019 costs include the certification fee, annual membership fees, and administrative costs for B Lab requirements like preparing social impact reports.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> However, some B Corps view these costs to be necessary, citing the community as a benefit of being certified<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><span>[5]<\/span><\/a> due to additional business opportunities<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> and discounts through B Lab partnerships.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>B Corps are still new and whether they are more profitable than companies who are not certified B Corps remains unanswered.<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> However, trends have shown that consumers favor companies and investments within the ESG space.<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><span>[9]<\/span><\/a> McKinsey researchers have found that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are 15 percent more likely to perform above medians, and those that rank in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity are 35 percent more likely to perform above medians.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Consumers are also increasingly mindful of whether a company\u2019s values align with their own before spending their money.<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> Ben &amp; Jerry\u2019s, a subsidiary of a Certified B Corp (Unilever), claims their own company\u2019s research shows that consumers are 2.5 times more loyal to companies that integrate values-driven action throughout their supply chains.<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Corporations are increasingly taking on the persona of a responsible citizen, while performing practices that prioritize maximizing their profits.<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a> Several certified B Corps have been exposed for predatory practices within their supply chain, yet none of their certifications have been revoked. Nespresso, a certified B Corp despite being a subsidiary of Nestl\u00e9, has been involved in a string of human rights violations like wage theft and child labor.<a href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> Another B Corp, Danone, dropped the contracts of 89 small organic farms across New York and New England.<a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a> B Lab reviewed the situation and found that this was not in violation of B Corp standards.<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While B Lab is the first to take on this level of a project, there are still obvious improvements needed. As the trend of conscious consumerism grows, companies have realized there is an upside to being a B Corp. It is up to B Lab to enforce and revise the standards they have set to ensure that companies are focused on their ethical mission rather than what the fa\u00e7ade of prioritizing ethics can do for its profits.
