After earning her undergraduate degree with a double major in mathematics and statistics, Romae wanted to move into the financial industry\u2014but that wasn\u2019t always her plan. \u201cFor the longest time, I thought I wanted to be an actuary,\u201d she explains. \u201cI did some internships, one of them was as an actuary at a consulting firm in Miami, but after, I realized I really wanted to be in the financial industry.\u201d That drive led her to the MS in Mathematical Finance (MSMF) at Questrom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot only is it a great program academically, but being in Boston has really helped. It\u2019s a great place to be in finance\u2014there\u2019s so much opportunity here,\u201d Romae says. \u201cIt was down to either Boston or New York, but I thought Boston would be a perfect place to go to school. It\u2019s a great mix of everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a rigorous curriculum, the MSMF program is certainly not an easy one\u2014but Romae appreciates everything she\u2019s learning. \u201cThe program has definitely challenged me, but my favorite part is seeing how applicable all of the knowledge we\u2019re gaining really is. I\u2019m learning things that I\u2019ll need to know for the future, like some of the different types of analyses used in the industry, or mastering the statistics side of the program. We\u2019ll definitely need to know those on the job,\u201d she shares. \u201cJust getting to know the industry, like knowing different principle components and industry jargon, has been really helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another perk of being in an academically demanding program is the community of other students, all willing to help and support each other along the way. \u201cKnowing that the material isn\u2019t easy, but that we\u2019re all working through it together is really great,\u201d says Romae. \u201cIt\u2019s great camaraderie. I\u2019ve made friends in the program\u2014and I think that\u2019s because the MSMF program does a great job of letting us get to know one another. They\u2019ll set up networking events for us, or speaker panels; sometimes even little Friday activities for us to destress and unwind,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the MSMF program, Romae has also made connections inside the classroom with faculty and program administrators. \u201cThe people behind the MSMF program will work very closely with you. They\u2019ll listen to you if you have concerns\u2014and since the program is so small, you probably wouldn\u2019t get an experience like this at other schools. I can talk one-on-one with the program director, and he\u2019ll ask for my input\u2014you feel like they\u2019re personally invested in your success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another standout was Associate Professor of finance Andrew Lyasoff, who, despite teaching one of the hardest courses in the program, went above and beyond for students like Romae. \u201cHe does such a good job of keeping material engaging and trying to ensure that everyone understands. You can tell it means a lot to him that we grasp the information. He\u2019s the type of professor to meet with you for as long as you need; with him, it\u2019s as simple as reaching out for help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for her future, Romae is eager to jump into the workforce. \u201cI came straight from my undergraduate degree, so I can\u2019t wait to jump in and start working and using all of the things I spent the past few years learning,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romae has completed her rotational program at GMO and now works as a Quantitative Research Analyst for the Systematic Equity Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
