When Miguel Perez (Questrom \u201927) arrived at Boston University from New York City, he was looking for more than a business degree. As a first-generation Mexican-American student and the oldest sibling in his family, he wanted college to be a place where he could grow, find connection, and build confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He found that in the Ascend Fellowship, a program that supports business students, including those who identify as first-generation and underrepresented, through mentorship, professional development, and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miguel first heard about Ascend during Multicultural Weekend (now the Mosaic Community Welcome) before his freshman year. After hearing Professor Allen promote the program, he was immediately interested. That introduction led him to apply, and by the time he joined Ascend in 2023, he already sensed it would be an important part of his time at BU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What he found was a community that made Questrom feel like home. Surrounded by students with shared experiences, Miguel began to feel more grounded and supported. The daily interactions with other Ascenders in class, at events, or just around campus helped him settle into the fast pace of college life. \u201cIt makes me feel better knowing there is always someone I can talk to,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Co-Coordinator for the fellowship, Miguel helped organize events, mentor students, and strengthen the community that once helped him. He sees leadership as an opportunity to give back. Planning programs and watching first-year Ascenders grow has become one of the most rewarding parts of his college experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up in a diverse city shaped how Miguel approaches leadership today. He values connection and communication, believing that strong teams begin with understanding. \u201cI try to ask meaningful questions and get to know people as individuals,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt helps create an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through company visits and workshops, Miguel has also gained a broader perspective on equity and diversity in professional spaces. Learning about employee resource groups and inclusion programs has made him optimistic about building a career in business where representation matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, what stood out most to him was the sense of belonging Ascend provides. Many of his closest friends are Ascenders, and that network continues to be his foundation. \u201cI do not know how I would be doing if it were not for Ascend,\u201d he reflects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, Miguel is bringing what he learned from Ascend into his future in finance and accounting. He wants to foster inclusive environments, work with diverse teams, and continue helping others feel seen and supported. \u201cEveryone has a unique story,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you take the time to listen, you will always learn something new.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For future Ascenders, his advice is simple: get involved and stay engaged. \u201cGo to all of our events, company visits, and speak to everyone in the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on the second floor of Questrom, because what you get out of Ascend is what you put into it\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
