However, if you\u2019ve never taken an online course, you might wonder what to expect from an entirely online MBA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a better understanding of how&nbsp;courses work in online MBA programs, you can determine whether this learning format may be right for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Is an Online Classroom Structured?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How do online programs work, anyway? No two programs are exactly alike in terms of format, structure, technology requirements, and curriculum. Therefore, it&#8217;s best for prospective students to research a program&#8217;s specific requirements and&nbsp;online&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;information&nbsp;before making a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curriculum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The curriculum of an online class mirrors the rigor and content quality of traditional campus-based courses, but it leverages technology to enhance accessibility and flexibility. Typically, online courses are structured around clearly defined learning modules or weekly units, each focusing on specific objectives and topics that build upon one another. In turn, there is a clear path to graduation laid out for students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each module blends topics in practical ways to help develop applicable knowledge. Assignments, quizzes, and exams are strategically embedded within these modules to help students continually assess their understanding and stay engaged. This may entail:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recorded or live video lectures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assigned readings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multimedia presentations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaming activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interactive simulations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discussion forums<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-paced activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Asynchronous vs. Synchronous Models<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to online classes, these are typically set up to be held either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/questrom\/blog\/synchronous-vs-asynchronous-classes-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asynchronously or synchronously<\/a>. An asynchronous class does not set meeting dates or times for the class, and there are no truly &#8220;live&#8221; components. Instead, students can log into their accounts and access all their course materials for the entire semester, working more or less at their own pace. While there may still be specific due dates for assignments, projects, and exams, students in an asynchronous program can otherwise complete their studies on whatever schedule works best for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a synchronous class, students have pre-determined meeting dates and times. For example, students may be expected to log in and attend live class discussions and\/or lectures via video chat once or twice per week. This type of class format is designed to replicate the experience of being in a physical classroom as much as possible, fostering real-time discussion between peers and instructors. Because of the time-bound component, though, a synchronous class may not be ideal for those with busy or unpredictable schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some programs, such as our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/questrom\/graduate-programs\/mba-programs\/online-mba\/academics\/\">Online MBA program<\/a> here at Boston University (BU), incorporate both synchronous and asynchronous coursework \u2014 resulting in a blended format that offers students the best of both worlds.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Are Classes Like in&nbsp;a Virtual Setting?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing the common question, \u201cHow does an online degree program work?\u201d would not be complete without discussing what the experience is actually like.&nbsp; Each program can differ greatly regarding the platforms used for&nbsp;online learning as well as formatting for assignments and exams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different schools may use different&nbsp;learning management systems (LMS), but these systems all operate in essentially the same way. Students will have a dedicated login to access an LMS platform and the material for each class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assignments, Exams, and Projects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Requirements for completing assignments, exams, and projects can also vary from one program to the next. Much of this will depend on whether the program format is synchronous or asynchronous. For instance, at BU, our Online MBA program consists of both solo assignments and team assignments, discussion board posts, and a comprehensive capstone project. Some modules also include more standard exams as well as simulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, students should make note of the process by which assignments should be turned in. In most online (and in-person) classes, students will be expected to upload completed assignments on an LMS. In general, gone are the days of needing to turn in a physical paper. However, specific formatting and file requirements may be highly specific to your instructor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure academic integrity in the program, students should also be aware that many online programs have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8407138\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virtual proctors<\/a>\u00a0that verify students\u2019 identities and monitor students while they&#8217;re taking tests to ensure they aren&#8217;t using prohibited materials (such as textbooks) or otherwise cheating on their tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Do Students Interact in&nbsp;Online Courses?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most online classes will have a participation component that requires students to engage in their coursework and interact with one another. In a synchronous class, students may be graded based on how often they participate in live video calls and discussions. In an asynchronous class, however, students may need to participate by posting in discussion forums or commenting on blog posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some online classes may also have a group component, where smaller teams of students collaborate on specific projects or assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to Know Before Enrolling in an&nbsp;Online Program<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Is an&nbsp;online education&nbsp;right for you as you pursue your MBA? Before deciding whether&nbsp;a virtual program suits your lifestyle and learning needs, take into consideration the following factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time Management, Discipline, and Other Essential Skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even in a\u00a0self-paced\u00a0online\u00a0program, you&#8217;ll benefit from honing critical\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/283025949_Time_management_skills_and_student_performance_in_online_courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">time management skills<\/a>\u00a0in order to keep up. Juggling online coursework with other life obligations (such as a full-time job or taking care of a family) requires the ability to plan and leverage your time wisely. Students in a synchronous or asynchronous program should possess a great deal of discipline and focus, especially when integrating rigorous coursework into their daily schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aligning Your Program to Your Career Goals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind, too, that online programs can be just as challenging and rigorous as in-person programs \u2014 despite their added flexibility. Before enrolling in any program, be sure that its curriculum suits your needs and aligns with your unique career goals. In other words, it&#8217;s not wise to choose a program based on convenience or price alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What About Accreditation?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, check for program and school\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/350108789_Impact_of_Accreditation_on_Quality_and_Excellence_of_Higher_Education_Institutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accreditation<\/a>\u00a0when choosing an online MBA program. A school or program that has been accredited has voluntarily gone through a review process carried out by a third-party agency to ensure it meets certain standards for quality.
