Carlos A. Santaella PuncelesFull-Time MBA FP&A, WonderX
“BU’s MBA program is a relatively small program that gives you the opportunity to actually get to know most of your peers. That would be very difficult if there were 1,000 students.”
After graduating with his bachelor’s degree from Hult Business School, Carlos applied to BU because he wanted to broaden his skills in long-term investing, was attracted to Boston’s diversity and culture, and admired Questrom’s accomplished alumni and distinguished professors. “I wanted a school where I would learn a great deal from every person I met."
He appreciates the variety of club, classroom and real-world learning experiences availed by Questrom. One of his favorite projects involved strategy simulation of the business environment of a car manufacturer. “It allows you to get a small taste of real life while at the same time competing to come out on top.”
Carlos interned at RWC Partners in Miami as a portfolio manager for its Emerging and Frontier Markets Equity Fund, with a focus on Latin America. Through this work, he developed an interest in investing in natural resources mining companies. As a result, “I am taking a course in BU’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences about the geology and economics of the global oil markets,” says Carlos. He also completed a decade-long outlook for companies in the lithium-mining industry. “It was very demanding, but the rewards were even greater. I learned more in those three months than I had learned in years.”
After BU, Carlos intends to focus on investing in emerging markets. His ultimate goal is to use his analytical and managerial skills to aid his native Venezuela. “I want to create a financial services firm to drive foreign investors to the country, and finance important projects, to help bring the country out of its terrible crisis.”
