{"id":5734,"date":"2019-09-16T14:55:39","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T18:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/questrom-magazine\/?page_id=5734"},"modified":"2019-11-18T11:37:59","modified_gmt":"2019-11-18T16:37:59","slug":"carbon-headache","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/questrom-magazine\/fall-2019\/carbon-headache\/","title":{"rendered":"Carbon Headache"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>If Boston wants<\/strong> to rid its air of carbon by 2050, it\u2019ll need to take drastic action. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/departments\/environment\/carbon-free-boston\">Carbon Free Boston<\/a>, a 2019 report based on research led by the Questrom-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ise\/\">Institute for Sustainable Energy<\/a> (ISE), has recommended several ways the city\u2014and others like it\u2014could reach that goal. Directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/questrom\/profile\/peter-fox-penner\/\">Peter Fox-Penner<\/a>, a professor of the practice, markets, public policy, and law, the ISE worked closely with stakeholders from the Boston Green Ribbon Commission and the city of Boston. Among the recommendations:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Create support programs for socially vulnerable populations to make sure that everyone has equal access to energy efficiency and clean energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Retrofit around 86,000 buildings\u2014residential and commercial\u2014with improved insulation, energy-efficient lighting, and efficient electric power systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Shift people to public transit, biking, and walking; increasing development in areas well serviced by public transit; and converting most cars, trucks, buses, and trains to being powered by zero-carbon electricity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Discourage use of gasoline-powered vehicles by creating a reliable system of charging stations for electric vehicles, offering financial incentives to people who adopt electric-powered cars, and imposing fines\/charges for driving personal vehicles into the heart of the city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> Stick with the Massachusetts Clean Energy Standard, a 2017 set of regulations that requires the state\u2019s electricity grid to be 80 percent powered by clean energy by 2050.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> Greatly reduce waste-related emissions by increasing food reuse, recycling, and composting.
