Sorry Again."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>It\u2019s a well-worn method for<\/strong> giving someone the boot: deliver the news in a no-nonsense style and tell the unlucky soul to clear his or her desk before lunch. During his 40 years in industry, writes Allen Questrom Professor and Dean Ken Freeman in <em>Harvard Business Review<\/em>, he\u2019s seen plenty rely on the tough-guy routine\u2014and thinks it\u2019s had its day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can alienate surviving employees, anger customers and suppliers, and destroy shareholder value,\u201d writes Freeman in <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/02\/a-guide-to-being-compassionate-during-layoffs\">\u201cA Guide to Being Compassionate During Layoffs.\u201d<\/a> \u201cLeaders can avoid, or at least greatly minimize, these repercussions by taking what I call a\u00a0\u2018soft hands\u2019 approach, treating important constituents with consideration and compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Freeman\u2014who was CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.questdiagnostics.com\/home.html\">Quest Diagnostics<\/a> when the company acquired SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories, forcing significant layoffs\u2014offers four principles for making more compassionate cuts. The first is to \u201ctreat employees with dignity, fairness, and respect,\u201d giving them as much information as possible and helping them find new jobs.
