{"id":234,"date":"2013-09-22T18:15:22","date_gmt":"2013-09-22T22:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nm.cms-devl.bu.edu\/everett\/?page_id=234"},"modified":"2014-08-06T10:05:51","modified_gmt":"2014-08-06T14:05:51","slug":"turning-green-into-green","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/questrom-magazine\/fall13\/turning-green-into-green\/","title":{"rendered":"Turning Green into Green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Perhaps it\u2019s no wonder<\/strong> that an electrical engineer who became a professor of finance would figure out how green buildings can financially benefit the people with the resources to fund renewable energy projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy research is on sustainable energy investments,\u201d says Professor Nalin Kulatilaka, codirector of the BU Clean Energy &amp; Environmental Sustainability Initiative, \u201cfrom renewable energy sources, like solar and wind, to energy conservation and energy efficiency investments, like building retrofits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The thrust of his work is to incentivize the up-front funding for green energy buildings from banks and other sources by writing a new kind of contract for the loans. The contracts are intended to turn green energy savings into cash, so the investors who put up the capital can capture some of the money saved as revenue from the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are now designing contracts that would allow the building owner and the tenant to share the savings.
