In her work, she focuses on teaching practices that are critical for fostering students\u2019 positive mathematical identities and agency. Dr. Shaughnessy has received multiple grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support the design, use, and study of teaching simulations to support of preservice teachers\u2019 skills with eliciting and interpreting student\u2019s mathematical thinking. She has also received support from the NSF to design and study professional development focused on leading mathematics discussions. Her research is deeply rooted in her work as a teacher educator, and she has collaborated with university-based teacher preparation programs seeking to become practice-based teacher education programs. In past work, she has studied the development of children\u2019s mathematical thinking.
