{"id":57621,"date":"2014-09-12T11:55:16","date_gmt":"2014-09-12T15:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/experts\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=57621"},"modified":"2019-10-15T15:03:11","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T19:03:11","slug":"william-mckeen","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/prsocial\/profile\/william-mckeen\/","title":{"rendered":"William McKeen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>William McKeen is a journalism professor and chairman of the College of Communication Department of Journalism at Boston University.<\/p>\n<p>McKeen is the author of seven books and the editor of four more, including\u00a0<em>Mile Marker Zero<\/em>\u00a0(Crown, 2011), a non-fiction narrative about Key West;\u00a0<em>Outlaw Journalist<\/em>(W.W. Norton, 2008), a biography of Hunter S. Thompson;\u00a0<em>Highway 61<\/em>\u00a0(W.W. Norton, 2003), a memoir of a 6,000-mile road trip with his teen-age son; and two anthologies,\u00a0<em>Rock and Roll is Here to Stay<\/em>\u00a0(W. W. Norton, 2000) and\u00a0<em>Literary Journalism: A Reader<\/em>\u00a0(Wadsworth, 2000).<\/p>\n<p>His most recent book is an anthology of stories about growing up in Florida called\u00a0<em>Homegrown<\/em>(University Press of Florida, 2012). In addition to writing two stories in the collection, McKeen gathered contributions from Carl Hiaasen, Michael Connelly, Kristin Harmel, Fabiola Santiago and Tom Petty.<\/p>\n<p>Before beginning his teaching career, he worked for several newspapers and magazines, including\u00a0<em>The Saturday Evening Post<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The American Spectator<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Courier-Journal<\/em>\u00a0(Louisville, Ky.),\u00a0<em>The Palm Beach (Fla.) Post<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Tampa Bay (Fla.) Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>His writing has appeared in\u00a0<em>Holiday<\/em>,\u00a0<em>American History<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Maxim<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Saturday Evening Post<\/em>\u00a0and many other newspapers and magazines.
