{"id":56839,"date":"2014-01-09T11:18:42","date_gmt":"2014-01-09T16:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/experts\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=56839"},"modified":"2019-10-31T11:21:48","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T15:21:48","slug":"leland-monk","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/prsocial\/profile\/leland-monk\/","title":{"rendered":"Leland Monk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Leland Monk came to the Boston University English department trained in the study of the novel, especially the Victorian and modern British novel.\u00a0He has taught undergraduate courses in the Bront\u00ebs, George Eliot, James Joyce, and the Bloomsbury group.\u00a0 He has taught graduate seminars in narrative theory, the historical novel, and Joyce.\u00a0 His book\u00a0<i>Standard Deviations: Chance and the Modern British Novel\u00a0<\/i>examines the novelistic interest in chance phenomena from George Eliot to James Joyce, demonstrating how British novelists\u2019 paradoxical efforts to include chance events in their meaningful plots gave rise to narrative innovations and contributed to modernist aesthetics. \u00a0He has also published essays on Jane Austen\u2019s\u00a0<i>Emma<\/i>\u00a0as murder mystery; Walter Scott\u2019s\u00a0<i>The Heart of Midlothian<\/i>\u00a0as Foucauldian prison structure; and the sense of nothingness in E. M.
