To learn more about Designated Academic Integrity Representatives (DAIRs) and how they can help you in a case of academic misconduct, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/provost\/students\/undergraduate\/academic-integrity\/resources-for-students\/designated-academic-integrity-representatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the DAIR webpage.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before we can dive into tips on how to maintain academic integrity, it&#8217;s important to understand what exactly academic integrity means.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Academic Integrity?<\/h2>\n<p>At Boston University, academic integrity means creating an environment of academic trust so that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students believe their work will be evaluated fairly<\/li>\n<li>Students\u2019 grades will accurately and fairly reflect their knowledge and\/or proficiency in any given course<\/li>\n<li>There will be free sharing of ideas without the fear of them being stolen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We create environments of academic trust by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Valuing independent work, thoughts, and ideas<\/li>\n<li>Giving credit when we use or borrow other people\u2019s work, thoughts, or ideas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Academic Misconduct Process<\/h2>\n<p>All students entering Boston University are expected to maintain high standards of academic honesty and integrity. It is the responsibility of every student to be aware of the Academic Conduct Code\u2019s contents and to abide by its provisions. The Academic Conduct Committee of the individual school or college, which is composed of students, faculty, and staff, has jurisdiction over all charges of academic misconduct brought against students in its courses.<\/p>\n<p>In all charges of academic misconduct against a student, the student is entitled to procedural fairness in any disciplinary proceedings.<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/policies\/academic-conduct-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Academic Conduct Code<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>details the guidelines governing disciplinary proceedings. It also defines violations of the Code and enumerates penalties applicable under the Code.<\/p>\n<h2>Tips on Maintaining Academic Integrity<\/h2>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">The course syllabus is your friend<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every professor and every class will have a different combination of information inside their syllabi. But one commonality exists among all syllabi at Boston University: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is really important information in them<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! <\/span><b>The information in your syllabi can help you make really important decisions that will help you avoid instances of academic misconduct.\u00a0 <\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This information may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Information about office hours (these are the times professors are generally free to meet with students) and how to reach your professors with questions, concerns, or suggestions<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A course calendar that includes homework assignments so students can plan out their workloads<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unique academic conduct expectations for specific assignments, for instance: on some assignments,\u00a0 students may be allowed\u00a0 to collaborate and submit shared work during group assignments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overall grade weight of each assignment, as well as grading penalties for late work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Policies about incomplete grades and requests for extensions on assignments<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Y<\/strong><b>our course syllabi can help you plan your workload ahead of time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Maybe an overview of assignments for the semester can help you see that you should start your final paper a little early so you don\u2019t feel overwhelmed during the final weeks of the semester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also <\/span><b>strategically prioritize your assignments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Maybe the syllabus tells you that a 1-page reflection paper due for your sociology class is only worth 2% of your final grade. So, when you have to choose between dedicating time towards your sociology reflection paper and working on your history term paper that is worth 50% of your final grade, you focus on the term paper for your history class.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the information in your syllabus to help you navigate a busy academic schedule can help you successfully meet your academic responsibilities while also contributing to Boston University\u2019s environment of academic trust. This information is included in your syllabi because professors want you to use it to make informed decisions about how you will plan and prioritize your workload.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Refusal skills<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintaining academic integrity is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> easy, especially when you\u2019re overwhelmed, stressed, and exhausted. And, as much as you may try to steer clear of academic misconduct in the work you do as a student at Boston University, sometimes your friends may put you in uncomfortable spots. It can take some practice to get comfortable saying \u201cno\u201d to your friends, but there are a few different ways to navigate these awkward situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>For instance, with some friends, you may feel comfortable enough using a little <\/b><b>humor<\/b><b> to say \u201cno.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student 1: Hey, what are the chances you\u2019d show me that psych midterm you aced last year?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student 2: The chances of that happening, my friend, are as slim as me waking up at 6:00am to workout with you. But, I\u2019ll be happy to bring you some dinner while you study!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>With other friends you may not know well, you can try giving them <\/b><b>alternative suggestions<\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student 1: We both have that take-home test due for Accounting. Can we work on it together? I\u2019m definitely in over my head with that class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student 2: No kidding! This test is haunting my dreams. I think I remember the professor saying we can\u2019t work on the test with each other, but she said she\u2019d be happy to answer questions during her office hours. Want to go with me to her office hours after class tomorrow?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no doubt that handling these situations can be awkward and stressful. But, using a little humor or offering alternative suggestions are two ways you can make the situation a little easier to navigate.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">On campus resources<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston University has a bunch of resources on campus to help students maintain academic integrity. Here are just a few:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designated Academic Integrity Representatives, or DAIRS: DAIRS serves as an academic integrity resource for students and instructors in every undergraduate school and college around campus. If you have questions about the academic conduct code or academic misconduct process, your school or college\u2019s DAIR would be a great person to ask!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/writingprogram\/the-writing-center\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS Writing Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers one-on-one appointments free of charge to students with papers from Writing Program courses (CAS WR courses) and most other courses that fulfill the First-Year Writing and Writing, Research, &amp; Inquiry Hub units. Writing Center consultants will help you address any questions about academic integrity before you hand in your work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Educational Resource Center, or ERC: The ERC is a great place to find resources like peer tutoring, writing assistance, and academic skill-building workshops. You can find more information at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/erc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.bu.edu\/erc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or you can stop by at 100 Bay State Road.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BU Librarians: BU\u2019s librarians are one of the best resources we have at the University.
