{"id":258,"date":"2012-02-24T11:16:50","date_gmt":"2012-02-24T16:16:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/provost\/?page_id=258"},"modified":"2026-06-22T10:38:34","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T14:38:34","slug":"initial-appt","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/provost\/academic-process-policies\/faculty-actions\/appointments-reappointments\/initial-appt\/","title":{"rendered":"Initial Appointments &#038; Secondary Appointments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/handbook\/appointments-and-promotions\/appointment-and-reappointment-of-faculty-on-the-charles-river-campus\/\">Faculty Handbook<\/a> provides general information on faculty appointments and secondary appointments.\u00a0 Review the required paperwork for different faculty ranks below. <\/span><em>Faculty Affairs has the right to hold paperwork until all require pieces are received.<\/em><\/p>\n<h1>Initial Appointments<\/h1>\n<p><span>Below, you will find instructions for gathering and submitting the proper materials for faculty appointments specific to the faculty member\u2019s rank.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Full-Time Faculty (&#8220;Unmodified Titles&#8221;)<\/h3>\n<p>The following requirements apply to full-time tenure-track faculty with unmodified titles in the Assistant, Associate, Full Professor ranks.<\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Required Documents<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h5>1. Initial Appointment Form<\/h5>\n<p>The most pertinent details about the appointment are listed here, such as appointment duration, work assignment, source of funding for the appointment, and a comments section. The comments section must include any special requests as outlined in the Dean\u2019s memo. All sections of this form must be completed; areas that do not apply should be marked \u201cN\/A.\u201d When the appointment has been reviewed and approved, a copy of the form with the Provost\u2019s signature will be returned as official administrative approval.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"button-secondary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/provost\/files\/2012\/02\/Initial-Appointment-Form.pdf\">PDF<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0<a class=\"button-secondary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/provost\/files\/2012\/02\/Initial-Appointment-Form.docx\">DOC<\/a><\/p>\n<h5>2. Dean&#8217;s Memo<\/h5>\n<p>This should provide a brief overview of the appointment. This information would include the proposed rank and appointment period, tenure review year, if applicable, courses to be offered, any additional responsibilities, and the proposed salary and funding source. Please see the section above regarding calculation of the tenure review year. It is important that all special situations, funding requests, etc., are clearly stated in this memo; they must also be noted on the initial appointment form. All information on the Dean\u2019s memo should be consistent with the rest of the appointment package.<\/p>\n<h5>3. Chair&#8217;s Memo (if applicable)<\/h5>\n<p>This should contain a descriptive, one-paragraph abstract of the appointment including a sentence on the educational background of the candidate, a sentence on the individual\u2019s intellectual interests and contributions to the field, and another sentence or two on relevant experience. Where a Chair\u2019s statement is not applicable or complete, the Dean needs to address these issues.<\/p>\n<h5>4. Affirmative Action Report Form<\/h5>\n<p><a class=\"button-secondary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/adapt\">Affirmative Action Report Form<\/a><\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<h5><span>5. Signed Offer Letter<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><a class=\"button-secondary\" href=\"\/provost\/files\/2026\/06\/Junior-Faculty-Offer-Letter-template-2023-update.docx\">Junior Faculty Template<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"button-secondary\" href=\"\/provost\/files\/2026\/06\/Clinical-and-of-the-Practice-Faculty-Offer-Letter-template-2024-update.docx\">Clinical\/Of the Practice Faculty Template<\/a><\/p>\n<h5>6. Three External Letters of Recommendation<\/h5>\n<p>Please submit three external letters of recommendation (for ASTPs and clinical ranks). These should not to be more than one year old. Please provide an English translation if any letters are in a foreign language.<\/p>\n<h5>7. Candidate&#8217;s CV<\/h5>\n<p>This must be up-to-date (no more than three months old).<\/p>\n<h5>8. Sexual Misconduct Background Check<\/h5>\n<p><strong>This is required for unmodified professorial faculty, clinical faculty, of the practice faculty, and research faculty. <\/strong>Per their offer letters, candidates will need to complete an <em>Authorization to Release Information <\/em>form for each employer for whom they have worked in the past 7 years. Once an offer has been accepted, schools\/colleges should send the signed offer and CV to <a href=\"mailto:hrtalent@bu.edu\">hrtalent@bu.edu<\/a> to forward to CSI, BU&#8217;s third-party vendor for conducting background checks. CSI will reach out directly to the candidate. Please note that appointment paperwork should still be submitted to the Provost\u2019s Office during this process \u2013 i.e., please do not hold the appointment file pending completion of the background check. The Provost\u2019s Office will hold approvals until that check is successfully completed.<\/p>\n<h5>9. For Paperwork Requiring Provost Approval<\/h5>\n<p>Please email PDFs of paperwork to <a href=\"mailto:apfac@bu.edu\">apfac@bu.edu<\/a>. You may contact the Faculty Affairs team with any questions or to check the status of paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>Once paperwork has received final approval from the Provost, the Provost Office will send a scan of the initial appointment form to the school\/college. Individual deans should send letters of notification to faculty. These appointments may come with voting rights or teaching responsibilities.
