UPA Puerto Rico Spring Break Trek 2019

Boston University (BU) students interested in learning more about rebuilding Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, will be traveling to Puerto Rico from March 11-16, 2019. This Spring Break Trek has been organized by the BU Urban Planning Association, and is open to all BU current students and alumni via a selection process. The trip activities will cover a wide range of issues including housing, economic development, energy, public health and climate change adaptation. The tentative itinerary is as follows: DAY ONE: Dinner and discussion with faculty and students from the University of Puerto Rico. DAY TWO: ENLACE del Caño Martin Peña (focus: housing, public health, land trust and zoning); Lunch and bicycle tour; Foundation for Puerto Rico (focus: economic development, bottom-up approaches, natural disaster recovery); Meeting with students from the University of Puerto Rico. DAY THREE: Marvel Architects (focus: energy, urban design); Visit to Microgrid community sites; San Juan Mayor's Office (focus: policy and politics, and that allocation of resources in their responses after a natural disaster) Faculty lecture and meeting with students from the University of Puerto Rico. DAY FOUR: Salvation Army (focus: disaster recovery, and social issues); Participation in community service in a disaster prone area. DAY FIVE: Visit to museums and city tour.
