Taiwan Today: Perspectives from Taipei

2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, which allowed for continuation of close cooperation between Taiwan and the United States after the establishment of diplomatic relations with the PRC. Today, Taiwan is developing rapidly. It has become a center of innovation and technology, and has had impressive growth of civil society. But concerns about its mainland neighbor are never far — indeed, Western coverage of Taiwan often seems to focus on nothing but. Such was the case following the November 2018 election which saw President’s Tsai’s Democratic Progressive Party lose significant local seats and referenda results to the Kuomintang party, and was interpreted by many as evidence of a Taiwanese shift toward rapprochement with the PRC. But is it?

Roberto Chyou has been Dean at the College of International Affairs, National Chengchi University (NCCU) since August 2017, is the founding director of the “Madre Ángeles de Dios” Center for Latin American Studies, and is also Professor of Diplomacy at NCCU. Kwei-Bo Huang has been Vice Dean at the College of International Affairs at NCCU also since August 2017, is the founding Director of NCCU's Center for Global and Regional Risk Assessment, and is the Secretary General of the Association of Foreign Relations.
