  • Ends: 8:30 pm on Monday, March 19, 2018
The Daily Free Press invites you to attend the next panel in its FreeP Talk series, now in collaboration with The Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground. “Race & the Media, In and Out of the Newsroom” will explore the impact of racial diversity on the newsroom dynamic and while reporting, with Katherine Kennedy (Howard Thurman Center), Julio Ricardo Varela (Latino USA), Meghan Irons (The Boston Globe) and Jonathan Cheo (NBC Boston). Katherine Kennedy is the current Director of the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground whose roots lie in journalism. Before joining BU, Kennedy worked for the National Football League and The Boston Globe. As a journalist, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Meritorious Public Service for her coverage of the Boston busing crisis of 1975. Julio Ricardo Varela is the Digital Media Director for Futuro Media of Latino USA. He is the founder of LatinoRebels.com, one of the top Latino media sites in the world. In 2015, Varela was awarded the DALE award by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists for his efforts to ensure Latinos are fairly and accurately represented. Meghan Irons is the social justice reporter and City Hall Bureau chief for The Boston Globe. She was a leading journalist behind 68 Blocks, the award-winning Globe series exploring daily life in the notoriously dangerous Bowdon-Geneva neighborhood in Dorchester. Jonathan Choe is a general assignment reporter for NBC 10 Boston. Choe is a graduate of Boston University, a member of the Asian American Journalists Association and the co-founder of Change Media Group, a company that uses multimedia stories to empower Chicago’s inner city youth. This event is free and open to the BU community. Upon arrival, donations to The Daily Free Press are welcome and encouraged.
