When Professor Simmons Lessell’s teaching in the fields of Ophthalmology, Neurology and Anatomy is evaluated, whether by his students or by his colleagues, he is invariably seen to be setting new standards rather than merely meeting the highest existing ones. A pioneer in the development of the discipline of neuro-ophthalmology, his lucidity and his ability to communicate both information and enthusiasm are matched only by his ability in assimilating and deploying the most recent findings of research and inquiry. In his own field, the ability has added to his international reputation. He is as important a teacher for the present generation of practicing physicians as for those who are now learning to be physicians. When he was an editor of the Archives of Ophthalmology, he prepared an annual review of the literature that not only instructed but delighted. He has even been called “the Father-Confessor of Ophthalmology” at the School of Medicine. He exhibits the science and art of medicine at its best.
