Julie H. Sandell
Senior Associate Provost
Julie Sandell is the senior officer of the University responsible to the Provost for matters involving faculty, and oversees faculty recruitment, appointment, and compensation. The Senior Associate Provost is responsible for the promotion and tenure process for the Charles River Campus and works closely with the University Provost on faculty policies, including those that support the University’s commitment to faculty diversity, professional development, and work-life balance. She represents the Provost in discussions with schools, colleges, and University-wide groups on issues concerning the faculty. Julie was first appointed Associate Provost for Faculty Development in 2009, and the role was expanded in 2011 to encompass all of Faculty Affairs. In 2018, Julie was promoted to Senior Associate Provost, a designation that includes oversight of the University-wide sexual misconduct training, as well as oversight of dean searches and period dean’s reviews.
Julie has been a faculty member in the Boston University School of Medicine since 1991, where she holds the rank of Professor. She is a retinal neuroanatomist and former Vice Chair of the Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology. She has also previously served as Chair of the Faculty Council for Boston University, and member, ex officio, of the Board of Trustees.In 2001, she received the Stanley L. Robbins Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest teaching award at the medical school.
Julie received her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984, and her AB from Princeton University in 1979.
