{"id":3935,"date":"2021-03-22T14:40:46","date_gmt":"2021-03-22T18:40:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/prehealth\/?page_id=3935"},"modified":"2025-09-09T11:31:03","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T15:31:03","slug":"professional-school-interview-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/prehealth\/applicants\/professional-school-interview-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Professional School Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Interview Town Hall for 2026 Applicants<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access the recording below<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CLICK HERE <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mymedia.bu.edu\/media\/t\/1_b0chwl1p\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/mymedia.bu.edu\/media\/t\/1_b0chwl1p<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Professional School Interview<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Watch the recording of the Interview Panel for 2026 Applicants to Health Profession School<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The personal interview is an extremely important step in the process of being admitted to a health profession school.\u00a0 The granting of an interview means that you have passed through the initial screening process, and the results of your interview will play a large part in whether or not you will be accepted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose of the interview is to exchange information between the candidate and the school and it is routine for the applicant to respond to a variety of questions.\u00a0 The interview also provides an opportunity for the candidate to ask questions, the answers to which are not readily available on schools\u2019 websites.\u00a0 It is wise to have done some research and to have formulated good questions ahead of time regarding a school\u2019s curriculum, special programs, or particular areas of emphasis.\u00a0 This type of information can be obtained by visiting a school\u2019s website and by speaking to alumni or currently enrolled students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is up to the individual health profession schools as to how they will conduct their admissions interviews during the current cycle, the Center for Disease Control continues to recommend limited travel and appropriate social distancing to reduce the spread of COVID-19.\u00a0 It is therefore quite likely that most interviews will be conducted remotely.\u00a0 The Association of American Medical Colleges provides the following guidelines to prepare for the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/applying-medical-school\/face-face-facetime-interviewing-medical-school-during-covid-19\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtual interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Preparing For Your Interview<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respond to questions in a sincere, articulate manner.\u00a0 Sincerity is a quality valued highly by admission committees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be prepared to discuss why you have chosen a particular profession.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be presented with questions regarding contemporary and\/or controversial issues.\u00a0 You should be familiar with current social, legal, ethical, economic, and political aspects of your future profession and problems related to the delivery of healthcare.\u00a0 The point of view that you present, even if it differs from that of the interviewer, is generally less important than the manner in which you support your position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be prepared to discuss any problems or inconsistencies in your application with your interviewer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use logical thought, and if asked a question to which you do not have a good answer, stop and think a moment before answering.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show an active interest in the school by asking pertinent questions of the interviewer.\u00a0 Substance as well as manner of presentation is important when speaking with the interviewer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never answer in a hostile, abrasive manner and do not hesitate to tell the interviewer that you do not have an answer to a particular question.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress your positive qualities without being pretentious; discuss your achievements (for example, research, volunteer work, and leadership responsibilities) fully and accurately.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dress conservatively, be confident and calm, maintain poise, and answer questions to the best of your ability.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Basic Interviewing Etiquette<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be aware of speaking too rapidly or too slowly, harshly, loudly, or in a garbled, high-pitched, or very soft manner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to avoid nervous gestures and other distracting mannerisms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye contact is important \u2013 look at your interviewer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above all, try to maintain a relaxed attitude.\u00a0 Do not attempt a slick or contrived demeanor, since it is artificial and easily discernible.\u00a0 It is natural to be nervous on such an occasion; interviewers are aware of this and usually try to put you at ease.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interview should confirm the applicant\u2019s credentials to the admissions committee and should reflect the applicant\u2019s overall experience, maturity and motivation, interpersonal skills, communication abilities, common sense, adaptability, sincerity, and intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Interviewing Resources<\/h3>\n<p>The information on these websites is applicable to interviews for all of the health professions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Preprofessional Advising Office<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>While we do not provide mock interviews, individuals who complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/prehealth\/applicants\/instructions-for-completing-the-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Portfolio of Accomplishments and Reflections<\/a> by the stated deadline are eligible for an Interview Workshop that is co-hosted by the Center for Career Development.<\/p>\n<p>We have developed a list of interview practice questions to keep in mind as you prepare for your professional school interview.
