{"id":8516,"date":"2020-10-22T14:18:39","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T18:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/polisci\/?page_id=8516"},"modified":"2026-03-16T12:22:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T16:22:08","slug":"honors-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/polisci\/academics\/advanced-undergraduate-programs\/honors-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Honors Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Honors Program in Political Science challenges you to explore politics in three ways:\u00a0 first, by taking and excelling in advanced coursework; second, by engaging in original research to produce a thesis; and third, by experiencing the practical world of politics and government.\u00a0 It is the most stimulating intellectual enterprise in which an undergraduate can engage, demanding dedication, creativity, and the ability to exercise independent judgment.<\/p>\n<h3>Application Guide Sheet: <a href=\"\/polisci\/files\/2026\/03\/Application-Guide-Sheet-Honors-Program-26-27-2.pdf\">Application Guide Sheet Honors Program (26-27)<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h2 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Application Procedures and Requirements<\/h2><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A minimum overall grade point average of 3.5 is required for students applying for the Honors Program.<\/p>\n<p>Students should complete the application in consultation with an\u00a0<a href=\"\/polisci\/people\/staff\/\">undergraduate advisor<\/a> and their faculty advisor. Students must choose a faculty advisor who is an appointed full-time faculty member in Political Science. The faculty advisor must complete the recommendation form, evaluating the student\u2019s potential success in the project. The faculty advisor and student must complete the Honors Program contract. This form must be added to the Faculty Recommendation form. Once all of the application forms have been submitted along with the appropriate signatures, the complete application will be considered for admittance to the program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The deadline to submit applications for the Honors Program is June 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each applicant will be notified of acceptance or rejection by email, and the appropriate course(s) will be added to the student\u2019s schedule.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Honors Program Application Form <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonuniversity.formstack.com\/forms\/ay2025_26_po_honors_program_application_copy\"><strong>Click Here for Honors Program Application<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Honors Program Faculty Recommendation Form<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonuniversity.formstack.com\/forms\/ay2024_25_po_honors_program_recommendation_form_copy\">Click Here for Faculty Recommendation Form<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Honors Program Faculty and Student Contract Form: <strong><a href=\"\/polisci\/files\/2026\/03\/PO_Honors_Program-Contract-.docx\">PO Honors Program Contract<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h2 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Courses<\/h2><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The student must satisfactorily complete PO399 or PO502 (minimum grade of B) <!-- or another acceptable research methods course (e.g., PO 501, PO 840, PO 841, PO 843) --> and enroll in two semesters of Honors Directed Study, PO 493 and PO 494 (minimum grade of B+), as part of the program. All three of these requirements can count towards a student&#8217;s BA requirements.<\/p>\n<p><span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h2 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Thesis Requirement<\/h2><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To graduate with Honors in the major, students must complete a thesis, which will be presented and defended to a committee of three faculty members. The committee will consider both the thesis and the result of the oral examination to determine whether the student will receive distinction in the concentration. The thesis will be archived at OpenBU.
