What If You are a Victim of a Crime?

Safety Tips

  • Lock your room or office door.
  • Do not prop doors open.
  • When possible, walk with a friend.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs.
  • Safeguard your property.
  • Use the University Security Escort Service.
  • Report suspicious activity to the Boston University Police Department.

What To Do If…

If you are the victim of a crime or if you witness a crime or suspicious incident, DIAL 3-2121 IMMEDIATELY and be prepared to provide as much information as possible:

  • Your name, where you are calling from, and your telephone number.
  • Persons involved—Names, sex, age, height, weight, clothing, and distinguishing characteristics (such as facial hair, scars, hair color).
  • Method and direction of travel (very important).
  • Motor vehicle registration number, type of vehicle, color, identifying features, etc.
  • Description of stolen property, and any other details that may apply.

If your wallet is lost or stolen, notify the three major credit reporting companies that your identification has been stolen —they can stop anyone from obtaining instant credit on your credit line. They can be contacted through the following numbers:
Equifax 1-800-525-6285
Experian 1-888-397-3742
Trans Union 1-800-680-7289

Once a crime has been committed, the best way to aid in solving it is to rapidly and accurately report all the information available.

Too often people fail to report an offender or suspicious person because they are not sure if what they have seen is important, are reluctant to get involved, or do not want to “offend” the person of whom they are suspicious. Just remember that if you don’t report the crime, a criminal may get away and cause harm to others.

Reporting a Crime

If you need immediate assistance or want to report a crime or emergency you can use any campus phone and dial 3-2121 to reach us. To report a crime via the Web, move the mouse onto the picture of the blue emergency callbox and press the left mouse button. The Detective Bureau can be contacted by phone at 617-353-3436.

Throughout the Boston University campus there are many blue emergency call boxes. The boxes are equipped with a blue light on the top, so that you can find them easily in the dark. There is a red button inside that will automatically connect you to the Police Department. To see a map with the location of the blue phones go here. The legend symbol for the emergency phone on the map is: call-box

Causing a false alarm or tampering with an emergency call box are arrestable criminal offenses.
