Heading Home for Winter Break? Here’s How to Keep Your Space Safe

As students prepare to leave campus and the city for winter break, Boston Police and BUPD want to remind the University community to take a few simple steps to keep their homes and belongings secure.

Before you head out, make sure all doors and windows in your on- or off-campus housing are locked. If you have a window A/C unit, especially one near a fire escape, remove it or ensure it’s firmly secured. If it cannot be removed, ensure they are securely fastened. Each year, some neighborhoods see increased break-ins during academic breaks, often due to unlocked windows or doors. Please take precautions in advance and, if needed, contact your management company or landlord to make sure that all locks are in proper working order.

It is just as important to secure your on-campus residences. Do not get a false sense of security that your room or building will be monitored at all times, and take the same precautions mentioned above. If you have trusted neighbors, let them know you will be away so they can keep an eye on your space.

Conversely, if you are remaining in the area during the break, please keep an eye on your neighborhood and call 911 if you see anything suspicious. Taking a few extra moments to secure your space can help prevent you from becoming a victim

Take all electronic devices and items of value with you when you leave, as these items are often attractive targets. Computers, tablets, jewelry, game systems, designer purses, and other high-end goods are particularly appealing to would-be perpetrators.

Students returning before classes resume should also be aware that BPD will be increasing patrols around the holidays, particularly around New Year’s Eve, to address noise, underage drinking, and large gatherings. Please be respectful of the families and long-term residents who live in these neighborhoods year-round.

Wishing everyone a safe and restful winter break.
