The 2023 PIT-UN Convening will be hosted at Boston University Computing and Data Science School, on October 12 and 13<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/pitun2023\/files\/2023\/05\/CallforPapers.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"177\" class=\"size-full wp-image-217 alignleft\" \/>Reviewers will select up to 10\u00a0 papers from undergrad students and up to 10 papers from graduate students from all submissions. All selected works will be peer-reviewed, and those accepted will be published in the Symposia online proceedings or presented during poster sessions, depending on the submission. Works can be focused on expanding theory or case studies of real-world applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tracks:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proposals are accepted from across academic disciplines, but must focus on the following tracks:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fairness, Ethics, and\u00a0 Bias in Technology\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public interest and societal applications of technology, such as health, education, climate, civic tech, and others\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workforce development for Public Interest Technology*<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology, Communication, and Culture<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Privacy,\u00a0 Data, Surveillance, and Society<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology and Policy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><b><i>* <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Public interest technology (PIT) is a growing field made up of experts from all disciplines who work to ensure technology is created and used responsibly. Public Interest Technology advances research that considers technology and related applications, laws, policies, and regulations as a path to fostering a better and more equal society.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Notice of Interest:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will have a symposium for Fall 2023, which will cover seven tracks. The aim of the symposium is to highlight public interest technology student work. Submissions are open for all disciplines. If you plan to submit a paper, share your intention<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/M2xTfHGDy4WjnB5S6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Timeline:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May 1st to May 29th &#8211; Expression of interest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/M2xTfHGDy4WjnB5S6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>**NEW Extended deadline** <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">September 1st<\/span>\u00a0 &#8211;<\/strong> Complete papers submission. Papers are to be submitted via <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/ZRK7XvTBuTLaEC396\">this form<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">September 2nd to September 10th &#8211; Submissions review by Review Committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">September 15th &#8211; Communication of accepted papers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">September 18th to October 10th &#8211; Final round of reviews by authors and production of posters. <em>(Note &#8211; The conference will adopt eBoards for posters.)\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">October 12th and 13th &#8211; Presentation during the 2023 PIT-UN Convening.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Criteria:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All submissions must be by currently enrolled graduate or undergraduate students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Papers must contain an abstract, the bio of the authors, and be no longer than 10\u00a0 pages, in Times New Roman, space 1.5, and <strong>MUST adopt<\/strong><\/span><strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/publications\/library-guides-to-citing-referencing\/attachments\/ieee-style-guide.pdf\">IEEE <\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/apastyle.apa.org\/style-grammar-guidelines\/references\">APA<\/a> referencing system, and you MUST follow the paper<a href=\"https:\/\/www.overleaf.com\/gallery\/tagged\/ieee-official\">\u00a0template provided by IEEE<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Papers will be evaluated based on the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relevance to the tracks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social significance\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originality\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clarity\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Selection, awards, and travel:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organizing committee will select 5 papers from graduate students and 5 papers from undergraduate students. Their authors will be invited to present their work during the 2023 PIT-UN Convening in Boston.
