Astrophotonics is a new system-on-chip approach to astronomical instrumentation to yield compact, modular, and novel ways to manipulate the photons from one or more telescopes on a chip. The photonic platform of guided light in fibers and waveguides has opened the doors to next-generation instrumentation for both ground- and space-based telescopes. With their compact form factor, on-chip astrophotonic spectrographs offer a transformative approach for building ultra-high-precision and high-stability ( 2, or > 10 billion years ago) using existing high-resolution spectrographs. Lastly, I will outline strategies for achieving these challenging measurements at an unprecedented precision using Astrophotonics.
