In both undergraduate and graduate admissions, few ideals drive decision making as much as meritocracy. However, practices and priorities currently associated with meritocracy systematically privilege populations who are already overrepresented in selective universities. A careful assessment is thus warranted of the ways that notions merit may be racialized. In this lecture, Associate Professor of Education at the University of Southern California Julie Posselt will present findings from a decade of research that reveals how inherited admissions practices often undermine our best intentions for improving diversity, and provide practical strategies for those committed to creating a more equitable future. |
