Imperialist Peace-Makers: A Study of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA) Mission in Manchuria, 1906-1923?

CURA Colloquium with Lingshu Liu, Masters Student, School of Theology "This paper will argue that the missionary activity of Presbyterian was a production of Japanese Imperialism, and Presbyterian displayed its comparatively supportive attitudes towards the expansion of Japan by constructing mission center in Manchuria. Presbyterian’s missionary activity raises a question of how missionaries acted as peacemakers in Manchuria. That said, did missionaries thoroughly support Japanese expansion, or did they find a balanced position between Japanese people and Chinese people in Manchuria?" *Reading the working paper in advance is required for attendance.
