2019 Pardee Center Distinguished Lecture: “The Past, Present & Future of Truth” by Marcia McNutt

What is truth? A scientist might tell you that something is true if it is verifiable by the scientific method. Courts have their own standards of truth. And until recently we believed that if an event was captured on video, we were assured of its veracity. But now the very foundations of what is truth are crumbling. Scientific studies are irreproducible. There is no scientific basis underpinning forensic science. Even videos are easily manipulated. Some say we are living in a “post-truth” era. There are several futures we can imagine given the current situation, but the one that we should most staunchly support is one in which we empower people and institutions to rebuild a stronger basis for distinguishing truth from falsehood. Join the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future for its annual Distinguished Lecture, “The Past, Present & Future of Truth,” featuring Marcia McNutt, President of the National Academy of Sciences, on Tuesday, March 5 from 5:00 – 6:30 pm (reception to follow) at the GSU Metcalf Ballroom on the 2nd floor of 775 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston.
