Boston University (BU) students interested in learning more about rebuilding Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, will be traveling to Puerto Rico from March 11-16, 2019. This Spring Break Trek has been organized by the BU Urban Planning Association, and is open to all BU current students and alumni via a selection process. The trip activities will cover a wide range of issues including housing, economic development, energy, public health and climate change adaptation.
The tentative itinerary is as follows: DAY ONE: Dinner and discussion with faculty and students from the University of Puerto Rico. DAY TWO: ENLACE del Caño Martin Peña (focus: housing, public health, land trust and zoning); Lunch and bicycle tour; Foundation for Puerto Rico (focus: economic development, bottom-up approaches, natural disaster recovery); Meeting with students from the University of Puerto Rico. DAY THREE: Marvel Architects (focus: energy, urban design); Visit to Microgrid community sites; San Juan Mayor's Office (focus: policy and politics, and that allocation of resources in their responses after a natural disaster) Faculty lecture and meeting with students from the University of Puerto Rico. DAY FOUR: Salvation Army (focus: disaster recovery, and social issues); Participation in community service in a disaster prone area. DAY FIVE: Visit to museums and city tour.
