The growth will be accomplished using the 2 furnaces currently installed or being installed in my lab. Characterization will be done using Raman/PL and optical microscopy. Depending on the timing of the project, I would integrate the project with current research in my group. This is focused on 2 things: Membrane filtration (gas and liquid filtration) using porous graphene and strain engineered optoelectronic devices from MoS2.

LEARNING GOALS
• How to use scientific instrumentation to fabricate and characterize electrical and optical devices from 2D atomic films.

The project would work well for an REU/RET participant since it exposes a participant to both growth and characterization. We’ve successfully worked with REU participants in the past on these types of projects. In fact, Lauren Cantley is a former REU participant who now works with me. Also a high school summer student, through BU RISE, accomplished our first growth of MoS2 at BU. I envision a similar project for the nanomanufacturing REU/RET participants.

Learn more about Professor Bunch on his faculty page.

Growing and Characterizing 2D Atomic Membranes PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project will involve growing 2D materials like graphene and MoS2.
