Most of the kids are lower economically disadvantaged, \u2026 are underrepresented minorities, [and] \u2026 ELL (English Language Learners) Students, but science is neat\u2026.and if I could bring any of the stuff I\u2019m learning here back to the kids that would be awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explains that her job sometimes presents challenges because of the cultural differences between her and her students. She says interacting with the parents of her students can be difficult, as many are newly immigrated to the country and speak little to no<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/photonics-ret\/files\/2015\/07\/IMG_4099.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/photonics-ret\/files\/2015\/07\/IMG_4099-477x636.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4099\" width=\"231\" height=\"308\" class=\" wp-image-273 alignright\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/photonics-ret\/files\/2015\/07\/IMG_4099-477x636.jpg 477w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/photonics-ret\/files\/2015\/07\/IMG_4099-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a>English.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScience classes (in high school) can be a challenge, of course, especially when English is not your first language\u2026.but I don\u2019t think it should always be about lectures and exams, it should be fun!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah will begin her twentieth year of teaching in September. An experienced teacher, when asked why she decided to participate in a program like RET, she said \u201cI thought it would be fun!\u201d A great and humble answer; it is clear that Sarah feels it is important to better her own knowledge so that she can share it with her students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the tools I am getting to use, and watch being used, are amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah says, though, she is not new to science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve done a lot of science work for Fish and Wildlife where I managed lamprey populations, before I became a teacher. \u00a0But it was all macro-scale and I know nothing about nano-scale. I thought it would be great to get this stuff back to the students. It is interesting and they might be interested in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before becoming a teacher, Sarah was a \u201cmilitary brat,\u201d as she called herself with a smile. She grew up all over the place, she says, \u201cWe moved around every four years.\u201d Sarah graduated from High School right outside of the D.C area, and then went to Norwich University in Vermont and received her Bachelors in Biology, her Masters in Industrial Technology from Bridgewater State, and later received her Masters in Education from Lyndon State College in Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>She now lives in<span>\u00a0<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/photonics-ret\/files\/2015\/07\/Sarah-dropping-with-pipette-477x636.jpg\" alt=\"Sarah dropping with pipette\" width=\"203\" height=\"271\" class=\" wp-image-403 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/photonics-ret\/files\/2015\/07\/Sarah-dropping-with-pipette-477x636.jpg 477w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/photonics-ret\/files\/2015\/07\/Sarah-dropping-with-pipette-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/>the North Shore of Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very spoiled, getting to live there. I get to take my kids kayaking during the summer because we live so close to the water.\u201d Sarah is a mother of thirteen-year-old twin girls. \u201cThey are quite a handful,\u201d she laughs.<\/p>\n<p>She thinks for a minute about her students, and the work she does with them. \u201cI think everyone should have someone in their life that makes science important\u2026for me, it was my dad. He made science important to me. I think teachers are really important for that reason. If I can get to one or two of my students, I would be very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RET Teacher of the Week!
