{"id":733,"date":"2019-08-29T15:26:35","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T19:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/philo\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=733"},"modified":"2025-09-03T09:38:44","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T13:38:44","slug":"benjamin-crowe","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/philo\/profile\/benjamin-crowe\/","title":{"rendered":"Benjamin Crowe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After completing my studies (B.A., Hendrix College; M.A., Ph.D., Tulane University), I was a faculty member in the Philosophy Department and Honors College at the University of Utah (2004-2016), before joining the Philosophy Department at Boston University (2016-present).\u00a0 I primarily teach history of philosophy courses, including Great Philosophers (PH110), History of Ancient Philosophy (PH300), History of Modern Philosophy (PH310), and Nineteenth-Century Philosophy (PH415), as well as other courses on classical Chinese philosophy (PH247) and on ethics and its history (PH150, PH350).<\/p>\n<p>My primary academic interests lie at the intersection of ethics, religion, and philosophy of society in the thought of key figures in classical German philosophy (Please email for a complete CV <a href=\"mailto:bcrowe@bu.edu\">bcrowe@bu.edu<\/a>).\u00a0 In addition to journal articles and book chapters on Fichte, I have translated and edited J.G. Fichte\u2019s <em>Lectures on the Theory of Ethics<\/em> (1812) (SUNY, 2016) and edited a collection of essays (with Gabriel Gottlieb, Xavier University) on <em>Fichte\u2019s 1804 Wissenschaftslehre <\/em>(SUNY, 2024).\u00a0 Also with Gottlieb, I have served since 2019 as \u201cco-positor\u201d (co-director) of the North American Fichte Society (NAFS; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fichtesociety.org\/\">https:\/\/www.fichtesociety.org\/<\/a>), the principal academic society dedicated to English-language Fichte scholarship.\u00a0 I have also published two books and a monograph on Martin Heidegger\u2019s religious thought, most recently in Cambridge University Press\u2019s \u201cElements of the Philosophy of Martin Heidegger\u201d series (<em>Heidegger on Religion<\/em>, 2025).\u00a0 I have published articles, reviews, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries on the early German Romantics, F.H. Jacobi, J.G. Herder, Wilhelm Dilthey, Neo-Kantianism, and Husserl, as well as on religious naturalism in the Scottish Enlightenment.\u00a0 I have recently joined a team of translators working on a new English-language edition (for Cambridge University Press) of the writings of K.L. Reinhold, edited by Martin Bondeli (Universit\u00e9 de Fribourg) and John Walsh (Martin-Luther-Universit\u00e4t Halle-Wittenberg).\u00a0 I am also a contributor to the Jacobi-W\u00f6rterbuch Online (<a href=\"https:\/\/jwo.saw-leipzig.de\/\">https:\/\/jwo.saw-leipzig.de\/<\/a>), a resource for scholarship on German philosophy in the eighteenth century.\u00a0 I am currently examining and writing on different aspects of Fichte\u2019s philosophy of community, as well as on the role of skepticism in German philosophy during the 1780\u2019s and 1790\u2019s (with primary reference to F.H.
