Conference – Global Infectious Diseases: New Challenges and Solutions
Infectious diseases were once relegated to the dustbin of history, but today emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases threaten health and health care systems in every country. Recent events, such as the measles outbreak in the United States, the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, and litigation over a compounding pharmacy’s liability in the spread of fungal meningitis, highlight the legal, medical, and bioethical challenges posed by infectious diseases. This symposium will explore the interdisciplinary considerations and obstacles raised by these and similar developments. Panels will discuss ways to encourage development of infectious disease treatments, lessons learned from the recent H1N1 and Ebola outbreaks, the legal and moral implications of mandatory vaccination, infectious disease control within the U.S. healthcare system, and the tension between individual freedom and state control during an outbreak. MassBio Event – Trans-Atlantic Trade: What the TTIP Negotiations Mean for the BioPharma Industry
The British Embassy, in collaboration with MassBio, BIO, and the British Consulate General, will host this half-day event to discuss the Trans Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the biopharmaceutical industry. Speakers from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the European Union (EU), and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), plus representatives from US and European biopharmaceutical companies, including BUSPH alumnus Usam Iqbal, Senior Medical Affairs Leader, Global Medical Affairs, AstraZeneca, will discuss the current state of the TTIP negotiations, the regulatory hurdles that currently exist in the biopharmaceutical sector, and what changes to the regulatory regimes TTIP might deliver.

Increasingly companies are putting ID serial numbers or bar codes on drug packages. (3) billions of drugs are out there now w serial numbers - a data scientists' dream. (4) what some companies have done w those numbers toward public health and (5) what's going to happen in the future.

Join the Pharm Program for a seminar on Tuesday, September 29 from 5:00-5:50 in L311 as we welcome Dr. Frédérique Santerre.
Frédérique Santerre is Global Head of Access to Health, responsible for establishing a new cross -functional unit and leading global health and innovative access programs and initiatives internationally at Merck Group. She is in charge of CEO and senior management leadership engagement in global health and is responsible for the company’s representation and activities at the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA), the Gates CEO Roundtable for Global Health and with global health stakeholders (e.g. UN, WHO, Global Fund, funders and philanthropies, NGOs, academia, think tanks and patients) on global health and access-related issues.
In her previous position, as Head of Global Government Affairs and Health Policy, she was responsible for government affairs and public policy globally for Merck Serono, the pharmaceutical division of the Merck Group. Prior to her arrival at Merck Serono, she was Director of the Health Care Systems & Global Health Policy at the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA). She also held various positions in international organizations, in academia, and in non-governmental organizations. In addition, she worked for the World Economic Forum (Davos). As a post-doctoral Research Fellow and Faculty member at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in the Science, Technology and Society Program in Cambridge, MA, she ran two multi-disciplinary research projects on biotechnology regulation as well as provided mentorship to doctoral students. In parallel, she ran global health and public-private partnership consultancies with UN organisations.
Frédérique Santerre was born in Paris, France, and obtained a degree in economics from the Sorbonne University, master degrees in comparative politics from Glasgow University and in international relations from Geneva Graduate Institute, and her Ph.D. in International Relations from the Geneva Graduate Institute of International Studies. Her doctoral dissertation was on the global governance of biotechnology. (Source - here)
