(functional analysis) from Universitat des Saarlandes, Saarbrucken, Germany in 1976. \u00a0His first degree is in Electronic Engineering (1971) from Universidad T\u00e9cnica Federico Santa Mar\u00eda (UTFSM), in Valpara\u00edso, Chile.<\/p>\n<p>In August 1971, Prof Salinas joined the Electronics Engineering Department at UTFSM. \u00a0In 1980, he joined the Mathematics Department as full professor, and in 1998 made his move to the Informatics Department, his current home.<\/p>\n<p>Luis Salinas has been Visiting Professor in several universities including National University of Colombia, Medell\u00edn; UNAM, Mexico City; Wurzburg University, Germany. \u00a0He has held a variety of teaching, research and administrative appointments at UTFSM. Currently, he is Director of the newly created Center for Technological Innovation in High Performance Computing of UTFSM, and Deputy Director of the Scientific and Technological Center of Valpara\u00edso\u2014both advanced research institutes located in Valpara\u00edso.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Salinas&#8217; research is currently focused on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Computational methods and function theory<\/li>\n<li>Computational methods in science and engineering<\/li>\n<li>Computational finance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Sample publications<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>New P\u00f3lya-Schoenberg type theorems.\u00a0St. Ruscheweyh, L.
