\u201cBasal\u201d funding<\/h2>\n

In 2009, Universidad T\u00e9cnica Federico Santa Mar\u00eda (UTFSM) developed a proposal and finally won a 5-year, US$10 million funding from the Chilean government for a\u00a0Basal technology center<\/a>. \u00a0This funding establishes the Scientific and Technological Center of Valpara\u00edso (acronym in Spanish is\u00a0CCTVal<\/a>, for\u00a0Centro Cient\u00edfico y Tecnol\u00f3gico de Valpara\u00edso<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Only five projects in Chile were awarded the Basal funding in this round, formally offered by the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, on September 2009. \u00a0Previously, in 2008, eight centers had been awarded funding, among them the now prominent Center for Mathematical Modeling,\u00a0CMM<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Basal program of Chile\u2019s\u00a0CONICYT<\/a> is the most important funding effort to date in the country, immersed in the government\u2019s new strategy to strengthen scientific research and technology. \u00a0The program was created to fund centers of excellence in science and technology that must incorporate the participation of the private sector and count with international networks of collaboration.<\/p>\n

Focus of CCTVal<\/h2>\n

The center created in Valpara\u00edso consists of three groups: \u00a0(1) High-energy physics; (2) High-performance computing; (3) Power electronics.<\/p>\n

The center involves collaborations with several international scientific organizations: \u00a0The Max-Planck Institute of Germany; the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland; and in the US, the Jefferson Laboratory in Virginia and the National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) in California.<\/p>\n

Support for this PASI<\/h2>\n

The CCTVal has approved supplementary funding for this PASI in an amount nearing US$10,000. \u00a0These funds will be used to offer hosting (labs, AV equipment and staff, coffee breaks, speaker recognition dinner) and support for students coming from other Chilean cities to help with lodging in Valpara\u00edso.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
