PARTISAN REVIEW
MOST COMPOSERS ARE
more dependent on public OptlllOn and the
requirements of mass communication than practitioners of the other
arts, and they cannot go underground unless, like John Cage, they are
willing to forgo the traditional media (the world-class orchestras and
opera companies) through which their art has normally been transmit–
ted. When I was at Harvard in the thirties I recall walking, probably
along the Charles, with Delmore Schwartz and passing on to him the
news that a mutual friend, the composer David Diamond, was to have
a work played by the New York Philharmonic. This was to be quite an
event, one that almost never happened in our circle, and in those days
it had the added fillip of a glamorous Sunday afternoon coast-to-coast
broadcast. Delmore expressed pleasure at the news but he was obvi–
ously envious that poets did not have the same opportunity to display
the hard-earned results of their creative efforts before a huge public
arena. All that poets had were readings in intimate venues and publica–
tion in the little magazines. (Having a single poem in a big commercial
periodical was the nearest thing to exposure via a coast-to-coast broad–
cast, but not at all the same.) For my part, I could only feel envious of
him and his fellow poets who could pursue their interests without hav–
ing to answer to the unholy demands of that glamorous world.
