COMMENT
W
E ARE SADDENED
by the death of Robert H. Montgomery, Jr.,
our attorney, a trustee of the magazine, and loyal friend. He
was sweet and sharp-a rare combination for an attorney.
Not only the leading entertainment lawyer in the country, he was also
always alert to the needs of
Partisan Review.
He was calm, persistent,
knowledgeable, devoted. We will miss him terribly.
IT
IS A LITERARY SCANDAL
that Doris Lessing has not been awarded a
Nobel Prize for literature. Doris Lessing's quality and output reminds
one of Balzac and Trollope. She has published more than forty books–
novels, memoirs, collections of short stories, plays, and even an opera.
One can only speculate that the failure of the Nobel committee to rec–
ognize Doris Lessing is either personal or political, or both. We hope the
committee will eventually make amends.
