withstand such beauty. Fron's approach is more practical. "Just give
them all free tickets to soccer games," he says.
Whether the fragile peace established in Kosovo will endure or not, a
human tragedy has already occurred there-the effects of which will
remain for some time. Albania, already one of the poorest nations in the
world, has had to cope with hundreds of thousands of refugees and was
ill-equipped to do so, even with the aid of the United Nations and sev–
eral international non-profit agencies; and there is another dimension of
the conflict that has rarely been mentioned or considered. The children
in Kosovo, like those in Bosnia as well as in Africa have seen former
neighbors transformed into fierce murderers and have witnessed events
that-despite UNICEF's admirable efforts to provide trauma centers for
them-they may never be able to forget, nor be able to heal from the psy–
chic wounds that have been inflicted upon them. What sort of world can
we expect to exist when these children mature?
If
the Unabomber's acts
of violence can be traced, in part, to flawed bonding with his parental
figures, can we hope to believe that children who have endured far worse
ordeals will have the equipoise to resolve conflicts peaceably, since they
have seen that brute force can conquer all, and we, the inhabitants of the
so-called civilized world, stood by with a nihilistic pacifism watching
this inhumanity for far too long before coming to their aid?
