PARTISAN REVIEW
this contradiction provided a fruitful challenge as wel l as a wealth of
rhetorical material for his speeches. And perhaps even for Nelson Mandela,
the American paradox of a revolutionary nation wi th a history of racial
division could offer insight into the uncertainty of progress.
Tocqueville remarked that in France, people's passion was for revolu–
tionary ideas, while in America, their passion was for democratic ones. Is it
possible to reconcile these two passions and offer modern revolutionary
movements a third political model? If one deplorable, repressive regime is
not to replace another, burgeoning nations might profit from some inspi–
ration and political guidance, for they need institutions that can enable
leaders to make sweeping changes while providing order, justice, equality,
and freedom. The era of revolutions is not over, and future revolutionary
movements might profit from a model that synthesizes the energy of the
French Revolution with the stability of the American Revolution, a
model that moderates revolutionary fervor with tolerance for ideological
diversity and respect for political opposition, a model that hurls a few bolts
of French lightning into our sky of eighteenth-century American light.
