Germany cannot morally refuse to entertain the possibility that it must use
force to stop ethnic cleansing in the Balkans.
For years, historians have pointed out that the Holocaust, like any past
event, carries not one but multiple lessons. It is only in recent months,
however, that left-of-center German politicians have concluded that the
memory of the Holocaust requires Germany to join its European and
Atlantic partners in defending human rights, with force if necessary. The
history of this remarkable transformation in the lessons drawn from the
memory of the Nazi past has yet to be written. It is one of the most
important developments in European politics and intell ectual life in recent
decades, with potentially profound and welcome implications for the
preservation of peace and human rights in Europe.
