and overdone. There is something arbitrary and insignificant about most of
the encounters along Inman's long path, and few of the personages he meets
seem more than shadowy. What deserves praise is something the movie ver–
sion (for which Frazier was paid $1.25 million by
MGM/ UA)
will have to
dispense with, for the most part. This is Frazier's prose, which is vividly
descriptive and poetic at once and places the book above its rivals.
