Five years ago, Adelphi began an advertising campaign that sought t
raise basic questions about higher education in today's world.
Sometimes we used irony to do that, and sometimes we managed t
irritate even our best friends, because we did not believe a serious subje
need always be approached solemn ly.
Yet, at their center, those advertisements reflected a very serious commi
ment on Adelphi's part to address difficult questions and to hazard imagin
tive answers - with our Core Curriculum, with our Society of Mentors, an
with an educationa l philosophy that brings the traditions and powers

intellect to bear on the disquieting world facing today's students.
We at Adelphi believe we have the seriousness and boldness required t
accomplish what many educators and commentators claim is an impossibl
task - truly educating today's students, teaching them not only what the
